About the project

Brand Story

Miriam and Sergio are the creators of Tonka. They came up with the new business idea while running Balafria, a small cafe in Barcelona, where they make their own pastry, and decided to go one step further. In Balafria they always offered vegan options, but not exclusively.

One day Miriam and Sergio decided to adapt all their recipes to vegan and see what would happen. Happy to see positive results and opinions of vegan and non-vegan customers, they decided to share it with a vider public, and this is how Tonka started!

Branding Concept

The word "tonka" comes from and is borrowed from the language of the Galibi, or the Tupi, Amerindian peoples of French Guyana and Brazil.

The design is inspired by the origin of the naming and different native decorative elements.

In a minimalist and handmade style, a simple, recognizable and original graphic universe has been created.

Naming

Tonka is a seed that is used in baking, giving the pastries a different flavor. Miriam and Sergio use this ingredient to give some of their cakes an original taste. The tonka bean is a seed produced by several species of tropical trees and is native to the Caribbean and South America. It is harvested from Mexico to Brazil but is found mainly in Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. These seeds are black and wrinkled and are approximately 3 cm long by 1 cm wide.

Logo

The logo is made with a custom typography design inspired by ethnic symbology. The design is organic and minimalistic, created with only two shapes. The letter "O" graphically represents the seed of the product (tonka seed). The irregular shapes and movements of the letters refer to the handmade product, very present in the pastry sector.
